Lxs niñxs reciben mensajes sobre género desde el momento que nacen; no obstante, estos mensajes se basan en expectativas acerca de los roles que deben asumir tanto niños y niñas como hombres y mujeres. Además, estos roles se refuerzan con mensajes relacionados con la ropa y juguetes que tienen que utilizar a través de programas de televisión, anuncios publicitarios y por la sociedad en general. Obligar a las personas a seguir estrictas normas de género es en detrimento de ellxs mismos, ya que cuando son pequeñxs, les es difícil comprender por qué no pueden vestirse con las prendas que a ellxs les gusta o jugar con el juguete que ellxs quieren.
Lxs niñxs que son acosados o juzgados por no adecuarse a estas expectativas pueden llegar a sentirse aisladxs y experimentar baja autoestima. Es importante permitir a lxs niñxs a ser ellxs mismxs y celebrar cada una de las características que les hace únicxs.
